I do believe there has to be a protocal of projecting important news ( especially news that may affect a community in real-time ) on social networking sites. But, it is nonetheless a great resource if you have the right groups to put out the news.On experiment I have been working on is trying to push out a printed newsletter on campus breaking news. If it happens at 11, we can have pretty much 2 people get info, a source, and print it on a one page template. We can then canvass the newsletter on campus.I havent tried it for breaking news yet, but just with passing out the newsletter, 500 copies can reach about 60 dorms in about 70 minutes. This experiment is trying to determine the viability of a breaking newsletter edition, which still progresses print, and the psychology of readers, who will pass by it in dorms/bus stops/cafeterias. I do believe this neo-paper boy method could be viable for small college publications.I think format needs to be talked about. The format argument is wide-open: I have seen countless methods of how different newspaper showcases their updates. Tagging, multiple story permalinks, series, linear text update ( most recent information on top ). Wonder what college formats are being used.

I kind of agree with Per. This post isn't necessarily about promoting your website (for self gain), but how to reach your audience quickly and efficiently (for their benefit). Drawing upon a timely, relevant case study -- even if an uncomfortable topic -- seems in reasonable taste.

I understand your concern. To me, using such an example works counterproductively.

Came here via a twitter RT. i found it in poor taste to use a current news story about a local student’s death, with full name and picture, as an example of how you should promote your web site.
