I thought that this would be a good place to get a brainstorming session going on some of the things that a wiki could prove to be useful for. My ideas:

  • Topical landing page content – pull descriptions of people, places, and things from a wiki that all can contribute to
  • Sports teams – you know there's those sports nuts at your school who know all about where past players are now, and where current players will be going, give them a voice
Those are just my two quick ideas, let's hear yours!

There's a couple of thoughts/ideas/examples I'd like to dump while my mind is on this tonight. The first are the topical landing pages for the NY Times. As an example:

I think the key components to this page are the text content (which could be wiki-fied, or certain users would have the ability to edit and update it), the big image at the top (which you could make a Flash gallery of the most recent or popular images), and the most recent/relevant/related links. This is what I'm really thinking about in terms of how the wiki might be useful; to create landing pages for all sorts of campus-related topics. For instance, you could have them on student clubs, the notable people within student government, or even classes.

Another example that I haven't had a chance to look at in depth is the Duke Wiki. It seems to want to be more of a campus resource than focusing content specifically on news.

As we prep for Thursday's session, I'm going to try and find as many examples as I can so that we have a lot of stuff to get the brain juices going.

MediaWiki actually has a pretty powerful API that you can use to read and write data, if you're integrating with your CMS of choice. The write part seems a little tricky but pulling data looks straightforward (with lots of output options).
