Hello everyone!

Greetings from Washington! The Dalai Lama is coming to our campus on Saturday and as the Web editor for The Eagle at American University, I'm tasked with creating a special report page. Since there are a lot of brilliant minds who frequent this forum, I was wondering if I could get some ideas/tips/suggestions on what to do!

Here's what we have:

  • Awesome high-resolution images of his holiness when he came to Capitol Hill in 2007
  • some backround information about the teachings that will take place on Saturday
  • An archived article from 1998 — the last time the Dalai Lama came to our campus
  • An advancer on Saturday's event that's moving for Thursday morning's paper

Here's what we don't have:

  • Lots of time — this will be released with Thursday morning's paper
  • Lots of content (yet)

What I'd like to do is some video previews or something to enrich this. Any other ideas?

You guys are the best!

Quick question: do you intend for this to be a primer in preparation for Thursday, or a landing page for any live coverage? It could be both, but I think each has a distinct approach. For the primer, I think it would be sweet to have a few paragraphs of background and context with links to more information about the Dalai Lama. The high-res images would make a great photo slideshow, although you might want to save that for after he comes. On Saturday, it would be really cool to see curation of his visit as it happens. This might mean blog posts that your reporters write, links to other blog posts from people on campus, curation of the best tweets and video that students take, and so on.

It would be sweet to see mockups of the page if you've drawn anything out

I'm thinking mostly a primer — but also a guide for people who are going to the event (like when to go, what not to bring, etc.)

For live event coverage, I'm probably going to make a special hardcoded homepage that directs people to our blogs and Twitter stream — as well as a live stream of the event if that's possible.

I'll definitely post any mock-ups.

I think a way to turn the page into a really sweet resource after the event would be to encourage readers to write in with their thoughts of what the visit meant to them, etc. It could provide an interesting perspective and turn The Eagle into *the* source for how students viewed the visit.

I'd also love to see some wireframes or mockups of what you've planned if you have anything at this point.

Andrew–

That's a brilliant idea. Just bounced it off our managing editor who really liked it. Looks like we'll be doing it!

Sweet, glad it's working for you Ethan. I think it could be really sweet, especially if you get a lot of different students sending stuff in. Good way for them to get published too. Keep us updated on how everything goes!
