At Daniel's request, I thought I'd move some discussion here and off of Twitter. This year at the YDN, multimedia is a big focus area for us, and thus we have been evaluating the best way to present multimedia content on our website. The first step was designing a new landing page to help people discover the great multimedia content our staffers are creating. Here's the new version:

New YDN Multimedia Page

Compared with the old one:

Old YDN Multimedia Page

In addition to revamping the landing page itself, we've also finally made available archive pages for each type of media (see All Xyz links at bottom of the "more" lists).

We've integrated multimedia into our site search engine, including our new filtering capabilities. We also offer searching within a media type from the type's archive listing page. Additionally, media appear intertwined with articles on staffer profile pages where applicable.

We will likely continue to improve our page over the next several months, so I'd be appreciative of any feedback for us.  Or, for the community in general, please share examples of inspiring or well-executed multimedia landing pages at other (college) news sites.

Hey Max, in general I like what you've done.

The individual pages are good although I would question the value of displaying just a photo. What if for the photos those links went to the associated article pages? I definitely like how you kept the audio and video within the relevant article as well as having it on the multimedia page.

One suggestion, when viewing an article that has a video associated with it would be nice to have the thumbnail be more "video-like." For example, at http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/university-news/2009/10/26/safety-dance-not-so-safe/ the bottom photo links to the video but for someone who doesn't know that it appears to just be another photo.

Overall though, I'm impressed by how much you guys are producing and how it's being integrated into the stories. Nicely done!

Definitely a big improvement, nice work! I think there's still too much content on the page. I just saw the LA Times new video page and, while I don't love everything about it and would have done a lot different, I like the overall approach.
