This week's question comes from Joey, Daniel and Greg:

What ways are you generating revenue right now, how would you would evaluate your success and what would you like to do in the future?

This is a real pet project of mine. First let me share what The Daily Orange is (attempting) to do:

  • Planned: Housing website is in the works. We really admire Heelshousing
  • In progress: A bar guide: listing the drink specials, deal, etc from all the local bars
  • Doing: Selling online ads on our blogs to national/local adverts
  • In progress: Using Google AdWords as little as possible
  • Wishlist: online-only ad reps
  • Wishlist: participation in a national ad network that gives a good cut.
  • Planning: moving off College Publisher to reclaim lost ad revenue
In a more macro sense, I've been touting some of these ideas fro a while now, but please check out this post on 5 ways newspapers can improve online ads.

Ah, revenue!

What we have: One space for online ads. Ads sold for semester: 1.

Having Ad space online (and having a site in general) is new to my paper, so this hasn't really taken off yet. I plan on making sure we sell an ad every week next semester, and make sure our ad manager is properly trained to sell them.

Planned: Classified Ads. This is a work-in-progress, but something we really want to get going, both for the website and newspaper. Building both from the ground up will (hopefully) help us be successful and connecting the two. Our idea right now is to use PayPal to charge for online ads… we're just working on how much to charge for what (eg. should it be free to post textbooks, but charge for housing, etc.)

Wishlist: National Advertising partners (like Joey said above). We have national ads in our paper, we just need to communicate to our national ad agency what we offer and get this in motion.

Primary source right now is Google Ads, though that really doesn't amount to much.

We're looking to expand to local ads and partnerships since that's where majority of our revenue potential lies. We're also considering the possibility of selling artwork, photos and compilations through our website (with revenues shared with contributers).
