The other day, I realised that JaikuEngine, the software behind Jaiku, a micro-blogging platform acquired by Google, is both open source and built on Django. This strikes me as amazingly coincidental. One of the ideas I've been toying with for the CoPress Social Intelligence Tool (i.e. a next version of our website) is implementing some flavor of micro-blogging client (much like Twitter, but focused on a few specific things). It would be accessible through the web, IM, SMS, and a desktop client, and the intent would be to report what you're working on. Value would be three-fold: allow you to easily archive web project-related information (what you've accomplished, time spent, relevant links, etc.), inform what your working on to other people and vice versa, and feed a search engine by helping to build a profile of your expertise.

The tool I previously had in mind was Laconi.ca; it's PHP-based, though, and not nearly as full featured. With JaikuEngine, I'm pretty certain we could get the micro-blogging component in workable order within the month. Anyone interested in helping? Have additional ideas?

I've been working on a similar thing for Vewd's upcoming update that's more social networky.Your ideas are mine exactly on the benefit of it – share what you're working on. Similar three-fold by-product as well.

I think I mentioned somewhere recently the next Vewd is Joomla based, wonder how hard it would be to hack either Laconi.ca or this over? I've just integrated JomSocial (a pre-built cheaters tool for social networking…) but it's not quite what I was looking for.

I'm all for experimentation, so I say go for it. I'm not sure how much help I am on the coding side since I know precisely zero python/Django, but hey – I've gotta learn sometime.
