Ok, we apologize. It seems as though the past few questions have been too convoluted. We're going back to basics this week:

How will student media (in general or on your campus) change in the coming academic year?

This could be related to print, online, revenue, advertising or any other relevant topic.

The biggest change to student media at Temple University comes from QR codes. The Temple-News has started experimenting with QR codes in the paper that point to stories online, as well as with dealing with local businesses participating with the program.

On a more abstract or philisophical level, I see student media adopting niche markets. I'm constantly pushing for topical Web sites under the homepage's umbrella so these areas get the coverage the students deserve.

Ok, I've got snow many questions if you're willing to answer them. I think this whole integration between the print and digital product has a lot of legs, but it's also going to take refinement to get right. It's good to see that people are finally willing to experiment.

Questions:

  • How are you using QR codes? Where are they embedded and what do they link to?
  • Are you taking metrics on adoption (i.e. how many people are using them over time)?
  • Any lessons yet on limitations and successes?
  • What are your plans for expanding this initiative?
Personally, I think the killer scenario for QR codes is an iPhone application that, when you scan the code, takes you directly to the article and allows you to see all of the comments, comments your friends have left, and allows you to share the article directly with someone (probably though Facebook). I'd be very interested in hearing how this turns out; you might even consider putting together a short video about it.

Would you be interested in writing a blog post about this at some point in the near future?

I am ready to see college media converge into one online space.  What I mean is that the campus media outlets (newspaper, magazine, TV, radio, etc) all come together into one well orchestrated online narrative.  A central website that aggregates all the wonderful campus-wide content and then displays it in a meaningful way for the reader/viewer/listener. I don't think that the medium but rather the content should dictate where it is placed in the online space.  Instead of having to jump to the radio station website to listen to a favorite relationship advice show or to the TV station website to watch a sports interview, that content should be placed into a meaningful area on a single website.  It will bring together audiences and display more relevant content for the viewer.

I would also like to see more voices and community encouraged.  I think that while investigative journalism is surely something to be valued and featured in the media, different groups on campus should be approached to provide content in short form.  I think that this approach will get more people across campus introduced to new ideas and new perspectives and it will bring new audiences to interact both online and off.  The short form will allow for content providers to easily make deadlines and not have the sense of feeling overwhelmed with the obligation.  It may also take some responsibility of the writers but require more from the editors. (For example; enlisting the Student Govt President to have a weekly post or the Clubs Sports President discuss a different club sport each week-which could be delegated to the chosen club sport president, or the career center providing career tips each week).
