Hey all,

The Daily Egyptian is one of CoPress' newest clients and also on the hunt for an online editor/administrator/assistant editor – basically, I've been on the Web desk for about a year and spent that time convincing our editor and others to move off of College Publisher, but now I'm the editor in chief and while we're making it happen (yay!), our Web desk is almost non-existent.

We have one person on it right now who's only worked here a few months and has limited HTML, Dreamweaver and WordPress experience. We had someone lined up to fulfill an adminstrator role but lost them unexpectedly.

So, while we're finally moving off of CP and would like to take full advantage of the freedom CoPress offers in developing and customizing our new site, we are suddenly without the resources to do so.

The problem is this: We KNOW there's probably people out there perfect for these jobs, but seeing as how some of them might be living in a basement next to a fridge full of red bulls, we're worried about whether we'll be able to find them.

Daniel asked me to document how we're dealing with this, so here it is. Hopefully this helps anyone in the same boat and/or can start a discussion about other ideas people have.

1. We got in touch with our most recently graduated admin about two weeks ago, who left us May 2009. He was an infotech major who was the last of a lineage of editors from that school who had done us the favor of finding someone else to fill their spot before they left. He didn't know anyone in April/May, but we thought we'd try again. He gave us the name an adviser for the computer science department who has contact with students suited for the job.

2. We e-mailed the adviser and other advisers/officials in any of the related colleges on campus: Computer Science, Information Systems and Technologies, then the Director of Undergraduate Programs.

3. We also posted the job on the School of Journalism Web site and and the webdev club (or RSO = Registered Student Organization) Web site.

4. We began seeing results, with some students e-mailing or stopping by, and have pointed them to CoPress.org for a greater understanding of how much or little they need to know programming-wise, and probably found someone to be an assistant.

5. But we're still waiting for someone suited for the role of administrator – where are you?!

P.S. Here are copies of what we sent out:

Web Administrator
The Daily Egyptian is looking for a student technical administrator to join the web team. The Web Administrator will play a vital technical role in the relaunch of the new CMS based site, and gain experience developing and maintaining a daily news website. The student worker will work on the CMS based redesign and launch of the website including working with plugins and the module layout, and working with the webmaster to manage the site.

Preferred Skills, but willing to teach:
working knowledge of Content Management Systems, Java Script and CSS.
    evening availability, Sunday-Thursday
familiarity working in a Mac environment
    problem solving, independent
    enrolled in 6 credit hours

Desired Skills:

    XML, and PHP
—–
Assistant Webmaster

The Daily Egyptian is looking for an Assistant Webmaster interested in online journalism and content management systems. The Assistant Webmaster will work with the Webmaster to update the website on a daily basis by posting photos and articles. This is a great opportunity to be part of a website redesign and play a role in the success of the new SIU Daily Egyptian website. Training will be provided and this is an ideal position for a underclassman interested in online journalism.

Preferred Skills, but willing to teach:
    evening availability Sunday-Thursday
interest in Websites or online journalism
    willingness to learn

Desired Skills:
WordPress, Joomla or other content management systems
    familiarity with Mac environments
    basic Photoshop
    MCMA related major

Finding a programmer suited to the newsroom environment — either someone who gets both editorial and programming, or someone who's willing to work in a crazy office for little pay — is always difficult. The way we've gone about it has been to hire a Web developer, not an online editor, and turn the editorial concerns of the Web over to the rest of the editors. There's less confusion this way, and now we have an employee who's really good at programming instead of someone who's so-so at programming and journalism.

I'll echo Will's statement here. Also, I think that what you have in terms of job descriptions is good and will hopefully attract someone stellar.

One other thing that we've found success with is looking for web staff through the students working for the Technology Services Office. I don't know if SIU has students working in that capacity but that's where we found our webmaster for next semester. The nice thing is that while those students may not have quite the coding chops of a CS major they will tend to have the interest in information and technology that is generally well suited to working in a newsroom.

I'll add to Will's thoughts here: Try to push as much of the online editorial duties onto the rest of your editors. You'll have a happier Web staff — and more importantly, you won't have as many problems recruiting Web staff when your next Web editor leaves.

I tried to spread out these duties as much as I could when I was Web editor at my student news org, with only marginal success. I ended up wanting to pull my hair out by the end of the year when I had to deal with tedious things that monopolized my time. My assistant took over my job after I left and is having many of the same problems. After he leaves, I have no clue who will take over, because no one wants a job with that many headaches.

Plus, the reality is a typical staffer — not just Web staff member — will want to know the basics of navigating a CMS when they graduate or go to an internship. They might as well learn it now, while they're still in college.

We started by trying to recruit students for specific projects—Help build a calendar. Develop a reviews site. Create a text book listing. Redesign a widget on our home page. Once we made contact with students interested in making cool things, we could work on them to turn them into regular contributors.

I hope that once we have a user-friendly back-end like WordPress, it will be easier to assume desk editors will learn the tasks to take a bigger role in online editorial content. With CP 5, it's been hard to ask anyone more than to post their story.

@miles I also like that idea and will try it on who we have in the web position now. I'm afraid she's in need of more developement work and those are probably some good ways to test how far she can get us on the functionality we want on the new site. If we are still need of the help I will try it on the new students in web classes this spring.

Crashing and burning from the CP experience has definitely made it hard to retain people willing to work, which is probably 1/2 the problem @emilyingram had.
