Development has begun on the first version of the WordPress E-mail Edition. The first edition will be simple, since I won't be able to work constantly on the plugin and I just a little over a month to release it. There won't be a huge number of customizable options to start with, although it will be easy enough to customize the code so you can change the text and such. The plugin has a projected release date of September 10, which is (hopefully) before anyone starts production. If people are starting earlier, be sure to let me know so I can push up the release date. As I imagine the plugin now, it will generate e-mails automatically but you will be able to customize every part of it before the e-mail is sent. For example, if you would like to change the lead of a certain article or add a note somewhere, you can do that without altering the article itself. Very highest priority: - Ability to ignore certain categories/posts
- Text and E-mail editions
- At least a per-issue and breaking news e-mail option. Best case scenario, customizable newsletter categories
- A basic, customizable template that supports advertising spots
- Ability to send e-mail to all users without an article
- First version will use PHP mail() function
Future versions: - URL shortening, with options for different services and compatibility with Short URL Plugin.
- Send out e-mails from specific categories automatically
- Detailed analytics, including bounces, unsubscribes, clicks, etc.
- HTML edition supports widgets, so you can add most popular, recent comments etc.
- SMS text integration
- Future versions will include SMTP support
- Better theming support
Is there anything I'm missing? | |

| | I can't wait to use this. I'm really liking the list of basic features so far. Would I be able to import subscribers from FeedBurner or College Publisher? That's probably one of the most important parts for most publications; they don't want to lose all that traffic from e-mail edition regulars. It's also hard to build that list again from scratch. | |

| | I still haven't gotten my list of subscribers from CP yet, so I don't know how hard it will be to import. I'd imagine it will be fairly easy either to do it by hand or for me to add a feature to do it, though. | |

| | A bit of a brain dump on this thread because I don't think I got to it in the last one. The critical features for me are: - Offers a plain text version or an HTML version
- HTML version offers theming (i.e. you can style it, change the layout with tokens, etc.)
- Articles that appear are customizable. Rather than just dumping in all of the articles in the last day, etc., I think it would be better to have "slots" or, say, 5 spots in the email that you can fill with content. When you're generating the email for the day, it prompts you asking how many slots you'd like and then you manually add each story you'd like to appear in each slot. This would probably be an easier method for prioritizing as opposed to having to move around stories that are listed chronologically
- Email notifications are sent to users within the system/ everyone that gets an email also has a user within WordPress. Basing the individual settings off the user profile system that already exists would be an easier method of managing customized newsletters further along the line. You'll also be able to track clickthroughs to profiles later on
The not so critical but nice to have would be: - Widgets for the HTML version and/or the ability to add recent comments, recent tweets, and other content that could be personalized
- Non-newsletter email blasts or other types of emails that isn't necessarily news content (community story assignments, anyone?)
- Analytics up the wazoo/ the ability to embed advertising
Looking to see the results of this, Will!

| | Also, looking through Configure SMTP might help in figuring out SMTP mailing support for the email newsletters. It's the plugin that Web Faction recommends to add email notification functionality to your WordPress instance (whatever is used normally is disabled on Web Faction servers) | |

| | I thought you guys might like to see what I've been up to. The Campus' development site is running the first version of the plugin, which is nearing completion. You can see part of it by signing up at here. | |

| | Cool, I'm signed up and the process is straight-forward enough. Are you going to integrate user preferences with the user system that WordPress offers? | |

| | Actually, now that I think about it, it might not be that hard to integrate WP users and WP Mailer users. I'll look into it. | |

| | Where can we get the download for the plug-in. Also did you move over from CP, and was there any problem sending it to your subscribers that had registered through CP? |

| | Do you plan on submitting it to the WordPress.org plugin directory? Also, I forgot to mention this, but I created a landing page on the wiki for the plugin a while back that you can consolidate a lot of this information to if you'd like. It would be cool to have this to point to if people have questions about the plugin and/or are interested in using it and trying it out. | |

| | @arobinson You can download the alpha version here, though I would wait until the beta version comes out, because the beta version will include an integrated import wizard, among a few other things. We did move from CP, and we have been having some problems getting our subscriber list from them. Most likely you will have to do a minimal amount of formatting before using the import wizard. @daniel I have signed up for an account in the repository but haven't gotten around to adding it yet. I probably won't until I finish the update and import functions. Thanks for creating the landing page! | |

| | Really liking the ideas outlined above. Glad to see something like this in development. I've always hesitated at revising our email subscription options because I want it to be something easy to pass off to the next person after me at The Pioneer. | | One of the best plug-ins I've seen for adding posts to e-mails is MeeNews. The only problem is that the plug-in was written in Spanish and requires you to understand a bit to comprehend it. It would also be nice to have a plug-in send an e-mail through MailPress so that you do not have to maintain multiple subscriber's list. I imported my college publisher users in with the import users plug-in (MailPress) and have it synced automatically so that new wordpress users are automatically set up with mailpress. |

| | Future versions of Courier will also sync WP and Courier users, so the multiple subscriber lists are not an issue. We use Courier instead of, not in addition to, MailPress. | |
