What tool do you use for e-mail subscriptions/alerts and why?

| | I think it would also be sweet to hear about how the formatting and templating is handled, as well as screenshots or links to examples if possible… | |

| | From a content delivery standpoint, we haven't really used subscription or newsletter services. I've always relied on the idea that FeedBurner has got us covered since it has email email subscription built-in — though I imagine we'd be better served actually publicizing that by having a subscription box in the sidebar of our home page. As for internal communications, we use mailman. It's not the most pretty-looking or easy to use, but extremely powerful. We also rely on Facebook to some extent, and I've toyed with using a blog for more generic communications as well. | |

I've written up a blog post about how the YDN emails work and what we're planning for Courant News: http://maxcutler.com/blog/2009…..criptions/ I'm very interested in learning more about what other people think about email systems, so please contribute to this thread or leave a comment on my blog post. |

| | As with Mo the Whitman Pioneer has just relied upon Feedburner for delivering content. We have a email subscription box at the top of our sidebar and currently have about 25-30 subscribers (plus more for RSS). While Feedburner allows you to customize the templates for email notifications I haven't really gotten to it yet because of other things. Max's solution for the YDN sounds like a good one with all of the levels of customization available. The only thing that I would worry about is that it would get a little overwhelming for some users. Does anyone know of better emailing options for WordPress besides simply using Feedburner? | Andrew – andrew@copress.org – CoPress Hosting Director – http://www.andrewspittle.net |

| | @Mo, could you clarify a bit about how you use mailman, and maybe why you haven't looked into pushing email subscriptions more? @Max, could you give a brief rundown of YDN's current emailing system, how templating and content addition works, and the features that Courant is going to offer for the thread? Thanks! | |

| | We use Django Mailer (with some modifications). It sends out a template every day, automatically compiling our issue. It isn't perfect though—it takes a LONG time and we have to use our school's SMTP server because WebFaction (our host) has very low caps on the number of emails we can send out. And there is little-to-no stat tracking. |

I covered the YDN email system in my post, but we just have a simple CakePHP view/template which pulls all of the articles for the desired issue grouped by section, plus that day's events and the frontpage graphic. When publishing the issue in the admin, the EIC just clicks "Send Headlines" and it generates the email for that issue and queues it up for sending through the system I described in my blog post. Courant will have a very similar system, with possibly an addition of customizable subscriptions as I suggested in my blog post. That concept is still getting fleshed out, so we're still trying to figure out exactly how it will work. |

We have an "all" mailing list set up in mailman, that all present, past, and upcoming staff members/volunteers are subscribed to, and we use it for all major internal communications. One of the biggest pieces is our weekly story list typically sent out on fridays. Not really the most efficient, and we're looking at ways to do it better though. Alternatively, some section editors choose to have their own subset mailing lists containing writers and contributers. As for pushing email subscriptions more, I'm not sure. Email newsletters have always seemed archaic to me, especially considering the availability of RSS, though I suppose there are people out there who would likely prefer their news delivered into their inbox.

Mo, I couldn't agree with you more. That said, email subscriptions, at least for us (we have over 11,000 subscribers), end up bringing in over half of our traffic. So I'd say, at least for us, a good solution to email editions of our issues is very important with any system we would end up using |

| | These are some great ideas. My biggest concern is the amount of subscribers we have on our lists at The Eagle. I really don't want to overload our server! We could obviously throttle an issue digest, but how would you do it for breaking news? | Web Editor, The Eagle :: American University :: Washington, D.C. :: http://www.theeagleonline.com |
