In a few hours of work today, I managed to figure out my way through the CP Redirect plugin we brainstormed ideas for previously. Version 0.1 is now available for download from the WordPress plugin directory. Before I go into too much detail, it's important to note that this version hasn't been tested that thoroughly. I wouldn't use it on a production website.

Features:

  • Standard plugin install
  • Redirect based on article IDs in a custom field for each post or, if your script made the new post IDs the same article ides, redirect across IDs
  • Should degrade gracefully (i.e. a redirect won't happen if the article ID map doesn't exist)
  • Support for College Publisher 4 URLs and College Publisher 5 URLs (although not concurrently)

If you do a College Publisher database lying around, I'd love to see how this handles requests for different numbers of URLs, as well as whether it works when the article ID is stored in the custom field.

I'm working on setting this up for CM Life right now and will report on how well it works. For a future version, Scott Bressler suggests that it handle both College Publisher 4 and College Publisher 5 URLs at the same time. The College Publisher 4 URLs with "media.www" in the URL will need a sub domain set up at that location with a .htaccess file like this:

RewriteEngine on

RewriteBase /

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^domain\.com$ [NC]

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

I might package that .htaccess file as a part of the plugin at a later version.
