Hey everyone,
I'm just in the process of pushing the next release (v0.2) of Edit Flow to the WordPress Plugin directory. For those who have it installed, you should see a notification to update. For those who haven't jumped on the Edit Flow bandwagon yet, grab it from here.
We've got some cool new features in this new version, outlined below:
Post Metadata: We've added some basic fields to allow you to capture some additional data for each article.
Quick Pitch: Similar to QuickPress, this dashboard widget allows users to create a new pitch for an article.
Editorial Comments: Edit Flow now supports editorial comments. Discussions on posts/articles can now take place between editorial staff within the WordPress Administration interface. This can cutdown on long-winded back-and-forth email threads as all comments are conveniently displayed within the Edit Posts page and better facilitate online workflows. Threading is supported (assuming it's enabled on your install)
Notifications: We've added basic email notification support. Email notifications are delivered when a post's status changes or an editorial comment is added to a post. Notifications are delivered to:
Post author and Administrators, by default;
Any specified roles (under Edit Flow > settings); and
Any users that comment on posts.
Okay, so what's next? Well, we've got some ideas. We're looking at things like enhanced notification support, additional dashboard widgets (editorial comments), personalized activity streams and RSS feeds, and maybe taking a crack at some of the bigger workflow pieces. Our initial plans are on the CoPress Wiki. We've deviated a fair bit from the release schedule but we're still on track to keep building on Edit Flow and keep improving it.
What we need though is your feedback. Let us know what about Edit Flow works for you and what doesn't? What areas of the WordPress admin do you think we could help improve. We're all ears.
As requested on Github playing nice with Justin Tadlocks upcoming role management plugin ( and others ) are important.
Tadlocks Members plugin ( beta ) has a filter hook on the available caps (see functions-admin.php) if you want to integrate Edit Flow specific capabilities.

Some feedback:
Maybe dashboard comments may be styled to use less space ? Maybe post metadata may be showed over editorial comments rather than beside, to give more space for text flow in editorial comments ?

Adding new default capabilities
Your plugin/theme can add new capabilities to the Edit Roles component if needed. This will allow users to easily select the additional capabilities for whichever roles they choose.
Imagine running a site with 20 different writers, publishers, administrators, and so on. Some people of that site need specific access to certain things but no access to other things.
For example, a friend and I are both running this site with all these people. The friend doesn’t need access to the WordPress options, but he does need access to your plugin’s options. Those should be controlled by two separate capabilities rather than one.
I created Members to allow site owners to have as much flexibility as possible. But, the plugin itself can only do so much on its own. As developers in the WordPress community, we can make WordPress infinitely flexible by working together, and I’m definitely trying to make it as easy as possible to integrate other plugins with my own.
Hey guys. The Edit Flow plugin seems to be exactly what I need for my site, but I'm having a few issues.
The plugin is installed and seems to be working other than not actually being able to set the statuses or…seeing anything about them outside the edit flow tab. I suspect another plugin is causing some conflict, but I figured I should start here.
The only plugin so far that I can think of causing any conflict is Role Mangager, as it also seems be donig a good job of killing the Members plugin. Even disabled the roles remain, so I'm a bit stuck. Any advice?
I was doing some work on our site tonight and I was looking at edit flow and it's 3rd stage of development. Just wondering the status of how work is coming on being able to send out specific emails to editors assigned to a story and not every editor.
I'd really like to turn email notifications on, but this is limiting it as of now.
Amazing work on this plugin by the way though, we are two months into using it and besided the staff groaning they have to go onto the site to see if anyone has posted revisions or if our authors have a new story assigned to them, they love the features and how it allows them to comment back and forth without using email.
@Jeremy: Sorry, just realized we never got back to you on this. If you're still having problems with the plugin, can you email me at batmoo@gmail.com with some more details (WordPress versions, plugins installed, etc.) and we'll try to figure out what's wrong?
@danielrandolph: We started development on v0.3 this past week and we're aiming for release mid-December. We should hopefully have a progress update in the coming week or two. Until the release, one workaround is to have any users you wish to be notified to add an editorial comment to the post and they'll receive future updates. Somewhat tedious since you'd have to do it for every post, but something to work with until we get the feature added in.
@jaroo: I'm assuming that by "assign" you're referring to the ability to select who should receive notifications for posts. We're hoping to add this in the next version of the plugin (see my response to Daniel's question above). The plan is allow you to select either specific users or groups of users that you create to be notified of post updates. If I've misunderstood, can you clarify? Thanks.

That is one part of it but I'm talking more about who has the ability to edit a post. Or at the very least, being able to attach the Editor's name to the post and allow posts to be sorted by Editor so the editors know what posts they are assigned to edit?
Right now, I can assign an author a post/article in the system, but I can't also only assign certain editors to the post.

Ah, thanks, that does make sense. We had discussed greater permissions control in terms who can edit what post, but we're not quite there yet. Though, the ability to filter by posts that a user is assigned to definitely makes sense. It's likely not a significant development effort, so we'll try to see if we can include it in the upcoming version.
1. Posting an editorial comment doesn't work with IE browser. Is there a way to fix it?
2. What are those 2 new submenus being added to "Post" menu in the Admin view which don't have any titles however are clickable? One is shoving a list of post status categories, another – a list of users ….

Thanks for the notes indevd and Adam.
1. Which version of IE are you using? I'll try to take a look before the next release.
2. This is related to a bug in WordPress. I've put in a temporary fix until the issue is addressed in WordPress.

Need help with edit flow plugin: (wordpress 2.9.1)
(1) when a post status is changed to "assigned", it will no longer show on the post list. The "All" link above the list shows the correct number of posts, but the list does not show it. (logged in as admin, supposedly see everything)
(2) two links with no strings appear below Tag menu on the left:
clickable, but no strings show, and content is slightly different.
when a post is in assigned status, clicked on one of these links that show counts of pending for feedback, assigned, etc, the counts next to them does not show correctly.
