We have it integrated and have a few subscribers, but haven't used it yet. We're only going to use it for breaking news, as to not annoy subscribers.

Future versions of WP E-mail Edition will include SMS text messaging capability as well.

The current SMS plugin uses SMS gateways provided by the cell phone providers. What this means is that each phone number gets an e-mail address so you can e-mail texts to the phone. A Verizon Wireless phone number can be texted by e-mailing number@vtext.com, an AT&T phone can be texted by e-mailing number@txt.att.net, etc. When you sign up for text alerts, the plugin asks you for your provider and simply inserts your phone's e-mail address into the database. This isn't the optimal way of doing things, and I'm looking into making the WP E-mail Edition's plugin non-reliant on SMS gateways.

As far as how well it works, we haven't had any problems as long as the correct service provider is selected. There are no costs on our end, though the user may be charged if they don't have a texting package.
