Hey everybody,

Wanted to let you know that we launched our new WordPress site yesterday: http://www.cm-life.com

We're still constantly looking for ways to improve on it, but it's obviously fit to run as Central Michigan Life for the time being. Note the Publish2 and Facebook widgets on the side, the larger slideshow of featured stories and some of the other cool additions we put up.

There are two things I want to do, or at least get started, this semester.

1) Find a way to break out Breaking News stories in a small red box above the featured slideshow area, for when we do have breaking news. I haven't found a decent plugin for that yet, so I figured I can look into how to do it and maybe try it myself. I'm still a bit new at this PHP thing, though.

2) Comprehensive author pages. Right now, our author pages include bios (which are very minimal right now), e-mail and Twitter links. I'm hoping to make a better page for each of our reporters and editors, to feature their mugs, more contact information, more bio and, obviously, their recent stories and such. I also want to see if we can break out our photographers' and designers' work better.

But, for now, the site is up and functional. So let me know what you think!

Hey Brian!

The site is looking great, congrats on launching.

A few things I could suggest:

Same height for post boxes: I'm using the Gazette theme too at mustangdaily.net, and I know it's kind of a pain to get those boxes lined up. It's really a matter of tailoring the headlines/excerpts to fit. The rule of thumb we go by is four lines headline + three lines excerpt or vice versa, and it usually lines up. It's extra work to tailor the excerpts and headlines, but it's worth it to avoid goofy unalignment. Another thing I've done to mitigate this problem is change the default excerpt length down to 35 words (you can change that setting in formatting.php).

Fixing the PagePeel ad:  I noticed the Page Peel ad you're using doesn't work in IE. That's the same one I was using, and there was a fix for it I found in a forum, but I recently realized it makes the search do something funky (I don't know how they're related; probably because they overlap). There's this German (or something) plugin with a similar pagepeel, but you have to guess at what you're filling in on the settings page haha. It works in all browsers though: http://www.webpicasso.de/blog/…..el-plugin/

Big slideshow:  Because your top banner ad pushes the content down 100 pixels and the slideshow is tall, I don't see any other content on your page without having to scroll down.  It's not too big of a deal and it will vary depending on monitor resolution, but it's somethiing to think about.

Author pages: If you want a simple fix for the author pages, there is a template here you can use:  http://codex.wordpress.org/Aut….._Templates. It'll look like this for individual authors: http://mustangdaily.net/author…..enRabaino/

That's all I have for ya for now.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, but your new website is looking really slick Brian. It's come a long way. I look forward to seeing what you come up with this fall and onward.

For breaking news, instead of a red box (which is a bit of an eyesore in my opinion) I'd do something like NYU Local:

At the top of the home page under the navigation bar, Cody has a slick bit of design that highlights developing (or breaking, etc.) stories. You could handcode this, ask Cody about how he does it, or build a plugin to do it yourself. When you move beyond the standard post content type, you could also link to videos, wiki pages, interactive databases, etc.

For author pages, I'd go all out dude. The Mustang Daily has a nice, functional design, but I think there's a lot of potential for doing something wildly creative.

Looking forward to further progress!
