You'll generally want to make a backup of your database before upgrading but, because we back up your site every day and WordPress upgrades generally go without a hitch, you're welcome to use the automatic upgrade functionality. Let us know if you have any additional questions!

You should also do at least monthly backups. Too many stories of something going wrong, and then the site is screwed.

Just in the last few months there were multilple updates due to secruity holes, which screwed people's sites. As well, as WordPress and MU move closer to 2.9/3.0, there will be enough bugs that may act funny with plugins and/or the db itself.
